Two-Way Immersion

What is the Two-Way Immersion program?

Two Way Immersion: This model allows for academics to be taught in two languages (English & the target language). The class is 50% English dominant and 50% target language (Spanish) students.  The goal is to promote high academic achievement, first and second language development, and cross-cultural understanding for all students.

Learning in two languages develops and activates additional brain areas as compared to monolinguals, and increases creativity, problem-solving abilities, and social-emotional competencies (Thomas & Collier, 2012).

Is the program right for my child?
Both native English speakers (regardless of race or ethnicity) and Emergent Bilinguals in Dual Language classrooms score higher on state tests and norm-referenced tests than their counterparts in English-only programs (Thomas & Collier, 2012).

Dual Language students show better attendance, greater interest in school, stronger cultural identity, more favorable attitudes toward students who are different from themselves, more favorable attitudes toward being bilingual, higher engagement in learning and fewer behavior referrals than their counterparts in English-only classrooms (Tomlinson & Masuhara, 2004).

Some benefits to being bilingual (there are many more!)

• Bilingual and biliterate: Dual language students achieve high proficiency in the immersion language
• Increased cultural sensitivity: Dual language students are more aware of and show more positive attitudes towards other cultures and other people. 
• Enhanced cognitive skills: Dual language students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, showing increased memory, superior problem-solving skills and better attention control as well as an enhanced understanding of their primary language. 
• Improved self-esteem: Being able to communicate and excel academically in two languages gives dual language students greater self-esteem and sense of accomplishment. 
• Proven performance on standardized tests: Dual language students show great gains and increased performance on standardized tests in reading and math. 
• Preparation for a global society and marketplace: Dual language students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where 21st century skills are an asset.
